Abstract
This study aims to examine the impact and effectiveness of art therapy on the improvement of the ability of self-expression and the hand-eye coordination development of toddlers with Nemaline Myopathy(NM). This study conducted 28 sessions of art therapy with 5-year-old toddles with NM. Each session lasted 60 minutes and took place once a week from January to July 2017. The researcher administered K-CDI(the Korean version of the Child Development Inventory) and a self-expression enhancement test. Pretests and posttests with House-Tree-Person(HTP) and Kinetic Family Drawing(KFD) were conducted for examining the effect of art therapy. The study also conducted qualitative analysis based on the log of each therapy session and behavior observation. The results of the study demonstrated that the toddlers with NM experienced improvement in the ability of self-expression as the sessions proceeded. The findings also demonstrated improvement in the overall level among the toddlers from 36 months to 50 months. The study is significant in providing empirical evidence regarding the effect of art therapy on toddlers with NM, a rare disease that hinders a child¡¯s fine motor development, because there is little research on art therapy for children with a rare developmental disease.
